The deployment gap is now the hiring gap

The interesting thing about Google Cloud's move this week is what it is not. It is not a new model, a new chip, or a new benchmark. It is a deal with Accenture built around forward-deployed engineers, the people who sit inside a customer's operation and make the technology work there. Google is racing to catch up in enterprise AI, and it has decided that the thing it is short of is not capability. It is people who can install capability.

Most coverage will file this under cloud market share. The more useful reading is that the bottleneck has moved. For a while the constraint was the model. Then it was the data. Now, by the implicit admission of a company with one of the best research labs on earth, it is deployment: the unglamorous work of sitting with a claims team or a supply chain planner and turning a general capability into something that survives contact with an actual process. You cannot buy that off a price list. You hire it.

The scarcest person in enterprise AI is no longer the one who builds the model but the one who can make it survive contact with a real business.

This is a repricing, and it is happening quietly. The last few years bid up researchers. The profile going short now is the engineer who is technically deep enough to change the system and socially fluent enough to spend six weeks in a room full of sceptical operators. Every company that wants AI in production needs a handful of these people, and almost nobody is training them, because the role sits in the gap between consulting and engineering where neither career ladder wants to claim it. Accenture has them. That is a large part of what Google is buying.

For hiring leaders, the practical read is simple. Before you sign the next platform contract, count how many people on your own payroll can take a model and walk it all the way into a working process. If the honest answer is none, you are about to buy capability you have no way to land, and you will end up renting the missing person from a consultancy at several times what it would cost to hire them today.
