The candidates Brussels rejects are still available

Reporting out of Brussels says the quiet part plainly. In one of the most international cities in Europe, candidates are still being rejected for being too old, or for wearing a headscarf, in a labour market that spends every other week saying it cannot find enough people. Both of those things are true at the same time, and that is the story.

Most readers will file this under ethics, and it is one. It is also a pricing error. A hiring market is a market, and discrimination is a way of refusing to look at your own inventory. The candidate turned away for a birth year or a piece of fabric does not leave the market. They are simply made available to whoever is willing to read the rest of the CV.

Every candidate you refuse to look at stays in the market, just not in yours.

This is the year that error starts running on rails. Screening is the first place companies point their new tooling, because it is the most tedious part of hiring and the easiest to hand over. But a model shaped by a decade of a company's own rejections does not correct the pattern in those decisions. It learns the pattern, applies it faster, and hands it back with the confident flatness of a score. What used to be one tired recruiter's afternoon now operates at the speed of the entire funnel.

That is what makes this a talent-market story rather than a compliance one. In AI and data hiring the scarcity is real, the available pool is smaller than most hiring plans assume, and a meaningful slice of it is being cut before anyone reads a line of it. Companies that keep those filters are competing for a fraction of the market while paying the price of the whole one. The ones that drop them get first call on people nobody else is phoning.

For hiring leaders, the practical read is simple. Audit your rejections, not your job ads. Pull the last hundred candidates who were cut before a human ever spoke to them and ask what they have in common. If the answer is anything other than the work, you have just found the cheapest source of talent you will see this year.
