The AI Act Turns Compliance Into a Hiring Problem

The trade press has stopped explaining the EU AI Act and started issuing instructions. HR Executive has now published what HR leaders need to do now, and the addressee is the part worth noticing. Not the legal department. Not the vendor who sold the screening tool. HR.

Most people will read that as a paperwork problem and route it accordingly. A policy to draft, a register to maintain, a clause to add at the next renewal. I read it differently. Regulation of hiring technology does not stay inside a document. It eventually arrives as a question put to a person, in a room, about one candidate and one decision a system made on their behalf. Somebody has to be able to answer that without reaching for the vendor's brochure.

A compliance regime does not create paperwork. It creates a job that somebody in the building has to be qualified to hold.

This is where the repricing happens, and it is quiet. The profile that can answer that question sits in an overlap most careers never cross. You need enough technical depth to understand what a selection model is actually rewarding, and enough recruitment fluency to see which part of your process it has quietly taken over. Companies have been buying these tools for years while borrowing the understanding from the people selling them. That arrangement holds right up until someone with authority asks, and then it does not hold at all.

What I see in the market is demand forming for a role nobody has a clean title for yet. Part data, part hiring, part accountable adult. The people who fit it are not currently expensive, because most organisations have not yet felt the need to define the seat. They are the same people every competitor will want on the same quarter, for the same reason, once the obligation stops being theoretical.

For hiring leaders, the practical read is simple. Before you renew or buy another tool that touches selection, name the person in your organisation who will answer for what it decides, and if that name does not exist, go and hire it. The capability is still priced as a nice to have. That ends the moment everyone gets the same deadline.
