Pessimism About AI Is Now a Hiring Constraint

Pew Research asked people across a wide set of countries what artificial intelligence will do to work, and the answers came back lopsided. Country after country, more people expect AI to cause job loss than economic growth. Not one jittery market. The global default, and it is the default among the people your next job advert is written for.

Most commentary treats a survey like this as a forecast and then argues with it. That is the wrong use of it. It is not a measurement of what AI will do to employment. It is a measurement of what capable people currently believe is about to happen to them, and belief is the thing they act on. Someone who thinks their function is next does not negotiate, does not switch employers, does not put a hand up for the visible project. They sit still and go quiet. That is the market you are recruiting into this quarter, and from the inside it does not look scarce. It looks calm.

Pessimism does not reduce the number of excellent engineers in the market. It reduces the number who will take the call.

So the market splits, and the split is where the repricing happens. A minority read AI as leverage, say so publicly, and become the small contested group everybody is bidding for. Everyone else reads it as a threat and withdraws. Employers end up paying a premium for the visible few while a far larger pool of people who could do the work sits one honest conversation away, held in place not by a better offer but by a belief about their own obsolescence. The same belief is already inside your building. A team that expects AI to end its own roles will not help you deploy it well, no matter what you spend on the tooling.

For hiring leaders, the practical read is simple. Say plainly, in the advert and in the first conversation, what AI will and will not change about the role you are filling and about the people already doing it. Candidates who cannot tell will price that silence as risk, and the good ones answer risk by staying exactly where they are.
